Our Making Moves service supports younger disabled people and their families to plan for independent living.
What Making Moves is
Making Moves began in 2020 and developed from a successful pilot project that supported young people with a visual impairment to live independently. We realised from the success of the pilot that there was a need for a broader service to support younger disabled people and their families to plan for the next phase in life.
Although housing options remain the same for those looking to live independently for the first time, Making Moves offers a rounded approach. We’ll look at all the housing options together, but we’ll also explore all the things young people need to consider to ensure their first move is a successful one.
Our dedicated Planning Meetings allow the young person, together with their family and any other support network including health and social work professionals, a chance to discuss what the future housing goals are and how we can take steps to move this forward. If you want to set up a Planning Meeting, ask for that when you fill in our Get Help form.
Helping you plan the next steps
We have developed some resources to help you in the planning process for independent living. You can access these now, or we can talk through them together in the Planning Meeting.
Our Making Moves online tool can help you think about what is important to you. You can choose the things you need in a home, tick what matters to you, and write your own notes. You can take your time and come back to it if you need to. The tool works on phones and tablets, and you do not need to make an account. You can download your plan at the end.
If you prefer, you can access the tool as a downloadable PDF, ‘Planning for Living Independently’, and complete it offline.
