About Hospital Housing Clinic
The Hospital Housing Clinic plays a vital role in supporting patients as they recover from life-changing illness and injuries, and plan for their move back into the community.
Through one-to-one housing brokerage, we remove one of the biggest barriers to discharge; unsuitable housing. By supporting patients to secure accessible homes, the Hospital Housing Clinic improves health outcomes and prevents homelessness.
The service began in September 2024 as a partnership project with the Occupational Therapist Team at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) National Spinal Injuries Unit in Glasgow and has now expanded to the hospital’s neuro rehabilitation, major trauma, vascular and stroke rehabilitation units.
We now run weekly Hospital Housing Clinics at QEUH, the brain injury unit at Murdostoun Rehabilitation Centre and at WestMARC – the West of Scotland’s Mobility and Rehabilitation Centre.
We hope, with funding, to be able to expand the service to more hospitals across Scotland so that more patients can benefit from the service.

I can’t believe this is my house.
My daughter’s the same. My daughter is absolutely delighted.
I mean, obviously it’s sad that it’s took an injury to like, get a house, you know what I mean, like this kind of house.
But certainly it makes things so much easier and so much better, because obviously this is life changing.
This is a positive I can take from that.
If I hadn’t of been introduced to Housing Options Scotland or Eve, it would have been a very different story.
I don’t know where I would have been.
My mental health was really dipping at that point. But now I feel like I’ve got stability.
It’s home. I feel like I’m home. As I say, it’s a lovely property.
I feel good in it.
It’s got a nice feeling.
Everyone’s friendly round about me. It’s accessible.
I can go for a shower, I’ve got a wet room.
They’ve sorted it all out for me, that’s the things I’ve not got to worry about anymore.
I can honestly, there’s not any negative. I’m trying to think of one right now and there’s nothing negative.
It just all been completely positive. And it’s all down to Housing Options Scotland and Eve. Eve was just absolutely amazing.
One-to-one support on the ward
Our dedicated Hospital Housing Clinic broker, Eve Young, works closely with clients on the ward to understand their housing needs. Through continuous working with patients, Eve offers guidance on the various housing options available, including social housing, sheltered housing, and home ownership.
Being involved in the Hospital Housing Clinic is enormously rewarding. By basing ourselves on the ward, we can build meaningful relationships with patients and their families to provide practical support at this critical stage of recovery. The clinic also alleviates pressures on hard-pressed clinical staff, who lack the time and knowledge to be able to offer specialist housing advice.

Working in partnership
As specialist and wheelchair properties can be hard to come by, we are able to use our professional networks to liaise directly with local councils, housing associations and property experts to bid for homes that we know will be a good fit for both clients and landlords.
In this way, the Hospital Housing Clinic navigates complex housing systems sensitively and efficiently, easing pressure on hospital staff, patients and their families, and ultimately helping people to find stable and secure homes where they can confidently continue their recovery and move on with their lives.
Working in partnership with Occupational Therapy teams in hospitals and rehabilitation centres is critical to our success. We are working with the OT faculty at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh to establish housing as an integral part of patient care and wellbeing early in the careers of future practitioners.
The housing clinic has been a hugely successful partnership in tackling the housing issues for our patients. The knowledge and expertise from our housing brokers alongside the skills from the Occupational Therapists ensure patients have the best possible chance of identifying suitable housing in a timely manner. A suitable house supports a person to maximise their independence and live a fulfilling life after such a life changing injury.

Within a year of launching, the Hospital Housing Clinic was acknowledged for excellence in partnership and collaboration in housing at the Scotland Housing Awards 2025, winning the Award for Working in Partnership. We were delighted to accept the award with our colleagues from the OT Team at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, and to have the service’s early and significant impact on reducing housing-related delayed discharge acknowledged.
We can take individual referrals for patients via our Get Help form, but we are also keen to expand our in-person clinics to other hospitals. Contact our Fundraising and Development Manager if you would like us to deliver the service in your area.
